Tent Pegging - 16 by InayatShah Tent Pegging - 16 by InayatShah

Tent Pegging is a sport of cavaliers with roots going back centuries. The exact origins of the sport are not known but it is claimed that the sport dates back to 326 BC in the North Western province of Afghanistan. There are two widely accepted theories about the term “tent pegging”. One that it was a training tool for the cavaliers in India. They were trained to stab the sensitive part of the war elephant’s foot behind the toenail. This caused the enemy elephants to run back into their own ranks and trample infantry. The second theory is that cavaliers practiced tent pegging to use it in a surprise dawn attack on enemy camps. Pulling the tent pegs of enemy tents caused the tents to collapse and cause chaos.

It reminds me of polo too.  And Buzkashi - an amazing sport.  The horsemen are very skilled in these games, and none of them are for the faint hearted :)  The tentpegging game looks very regal - a sport of kings and aristocrats?  Even if it started off as doing very unpleasant things to elephants, it looks as if it has become very stylish now.

Well from my friends that I know, There is a slight separation between the Polo players and the Tent peggers.
The "Aristocracy" of Pakistan can easily be split between the "Industrialists" and the "Feudal Landlords" .. Both sports are equally expensive, to manage a stable of horses.  The Industrialists tend to favor Polo while the feudal landlords somehow favour tent pegging. But you will find polo teams playing tent pegging, but rarely versa.

Tent pegging is making quite the revival, It was very popular during the times of Zulfiqar ALi Bhutto .. In those years there was The Government sponsored annual Horse and Cattle shows in most major cities and Tent Pegging was the the major attraction.  This fizzled out and was replaced by privately run ones .. they lasted a number of years and then fizzled out.  About five years back .. the government again started sponsoring Tent pegging events especially in the capital and now we see a major revival of the sport

Have enjoyed your series of photographs called -tent pegging. This image is full of action, horse and rider captivating. Reminds me of polo in some respects but the atmosphere seems more charged:rose:

Thank you very much .. actually they say polo has its orgins going back to the same set of lancers/cavalry that was responsible for tent pegging.  And here most of the participants are also on polo teams.
